a chance encounter at a conference workshop, and suddenly it wasn’t just small talk. Asha and vladimir went from strangers to inseparable over a single weekend—those early Conversations stretched from haitian politics to southern rap and spilled out of a first date and into a parking garage they couldn’t bring themselves to leave. years later, same date, barcelona: a walk through historic gardens, a proposal mid-sentence, a suite overtaken with roses, then a sunset sail with a guitarist strumming in the background.

their wedding carried that same energy. music was central (a morning jam session, asha singing with her sorority sisters); fashion was classic, but self-aware, tailored and textured. and then the vows. no performance, no distance, just something raw enough to pull the entire room under with them, everyone feeling it all at once. And with that, Asha’s new last name was geneus—even these scientists can’t deny that fate had a say.

Two Doctoral students, one big love.

“We wrote Our own vows to each other, and when we said them, it felt like there was no one else in the room. Neither of us are big public criers, but we were pretty much immediately emotional. Asha insisted she wasn’t going to cry and then cried about three lines in, so that was fun. We also found out later that all our family and friends were crying too, so the whole room was just a collective ball of emotions.”

“I like classic tailoring, and I liked the idea of switching up my daily style and doing a more formal look,” Vlad says. “Asha called me the 'creative director’ of the wedding, and I do think I had a lot of ideas about how to visually express what we wanted to convey to our guests.”

Vlad wears a Black tuxedo—wool, single-breasted Modern cut, shawl lapels, Low-cut waistcoat Diamond point bow-tie (lots of practice)—with diamond studs and a dinner watch. “I truly felt like the most interesting man in the world.”

asha wears an embroidered Anne barge ball gown with a sweetheart neckline and a boned bodice. “As soon as I tried it on, I knew it was the one. I felt like myself in the absolute best way, and the dress was also light enough to dance in.”

“Every stranger who saw our first look was thrilled for us. There was a little girl in the park who thought Asha was a princess, a city bus driver who stopped at a red light to wish us the best, and a lot of cars who honked furiously when they saw us.”

“Vlad's mother and sister gave a beautiful French-English speech about how much they love us—and how happy our love makes those around us. Asha’s cousin, the maid of honor, spoke about how she saw our relationship transform both of us for the better. And Vlad’s brother and best man brought the house down with a beautiful toast. Together, they represented the warmth and connection we felt from our loved ones the entire day.”

“Asha is in a sorority, and that sisterhood is an important part of her life. Singing the hymn together is a big tradition, and it was beautiful to see sisters from all the different parts of her life sing with her.”

K. “For my reception dress, I wanted to go with something elegant, but high-energy to match the party vibes. I went with an ice blue sequined Retrofete gown, which I paired with a tousled updo and my late grandmother's pendant and tennis bracelet.”

E. “Music is a big way we've connected with the people we love over the years, so it felt right to incorporate those moments into our big day. Vlad and his siblings had an impromptu jam session the morning of—It’s the way they spend some of their best times together, so it definitely set the mood for the morning.”

Testimonial

“We were absolutely thrilled with Nikki Daskalakis. Photography was one of the most important parts of the wedding for us, and we identified her as our top choice before even finding a wedding planner.

She captured not only beautiful portraits, but the big feelings and small moments that truly make a wedding day. She overdelivered on every front–our photos feel like a living documentary of the day. You can literally feel the joy and love in each one."

"Would rebook 1000x over.”
